https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=454 Castle Crags State Park is located in Northern California and is open for camping year around. They have 28 miles of scenic hiking trails and 76 camp sites. The Sacramento River runs through it and provides both beauty and great fishing. It is very nice area to camp in. There is old rumor of gold plundered from a stagecoach hid up somewhere in the crags. https://www.therockerbox.com/shasta_county_ca_lost_treasures.html It got its name from a bloody battle that happened in 1855 between the miners and the local Indians. It is a sad and unfortunate part of history. http://activenorcal.net/history/remembering-the-bloody-battle-of-castle-crags-in-1855/

It really depends on when you go. It was hot but not as hot as in the valley.
